Story
街から少し離れ、草が生い茂った獣道を進んだ先に、見上げるほどの階段が現れた。 息を切らしながら、木陰が揺れるのを横目に進んでいく。 差し込む光が広がった先に、小さなブルーのプレハブ小屋を見つけた。 息を整え、木の扉のドアノブに手を置く。
ここは、「はじまりとおわり」を研究する「フィン研究所」というところらしい。 扉を押すと意外と軽く、勢いよく押してしまった。 ちょっと恥ずかしい気持ちで目線をあげると、 真っ白いエプロンを身につけたおじいさんとは言い難い男性が 歯ブラシを咥えたまま、驚いた顔をしていた。
「ふぉんにちは。」 と裏返った声で挨拶をしてくれた。 その声はちょっと変で、強張った私のこころを一瞬で解いていった。 男性は慌てて奥の扉の向こうに行ってしまった。
ここに来るまで、“ただはじまって、ただ終わる” そんな日常が嫌いだった。 自分を犠牲にすればうまくいくと信じていたけど、 小さな違和感が私のこころを締め付けていた。
記憶もおぼろけなまま、気づいたらこの場所へ導かれるように歩いていた。 大切なものを探しにいくように。
「歯を磨くって、気持ちがいいものだ。」 男性が奥からひょっこり顔を出した。
私はなんだか可笑しくて、口ごもりながら、 「そうですね。」って返すことしかできなかった。
小屋をでると、野花が揺れ、心地よい風が服をすり抜けてきた。 新しい日々の物語がはじまったような気がした。 わたしの新しい「はじまりとおわり」の物語。
A short distance out of town, a grassy animal trail led to a staircase that I could look up. Panting for breath, I continued on, the shade of the trees swaying beside me. Beyond the expanse of light, I found a small blue prefab hut. Catching my breath, I put my hand on the doorknob of the wooden door.
This place is called the “FIN Institute”, a place that studies “beginnings and endings”. I gave the door a hard push, but it was surprisingly light and swung open easily. Feeling a little embarrassed, I looked up to see a young-looking old man wearing a bright white apron, with a toothbrush in his mouth and a surprised look on his face.
He greeted me in a garbled voice, “Hello”. His voice was a little strange, and it instantly relieved the tension in my heart. The man hurriedly went behind a door in the back of the house.
Until I came here, I disliked the mundane daily routines of “beginnings and endings”. I believed that if I sacrificed myself everything would work out, but a small sense of unease filled my heart.
My memory was hazy, but I found myself walking as if I were being led to this place. It was as if I was searching for something important.
“Brushing your teeth feels so good, doesn’t it?” the man said as he peeked out from the back of the room. I found that funny and could only stammer, “Yes, it does”. As I left the hut, wildflowers swayed in the air, and a pleasant breeze slipped through my clothes. I felt as if a story of new days had begun. The story of my new “beginnings and endings”.
